UNIVERSITY CLINICS - ONE MEDICAL SCHOOL IN EVERY HOSPITAL

UNIVERSITY CLINICS - ONE MEDICAL SCHOOL IN EVERY HOSPITAL - Filenews 6/11 by Marilena Panayi

The provision for one main Medical School per hospital was decided, according to information from filenews, to be adopted by the parliamentary Committee on Health, during yesterday's article-by-article discussion of the bill for the institutionalization of university clinics.

This is one of the main regulations that had been the subject of disagreements between the bodies involved and which is also supported by the Ministry of Health, after the previous consultations.

This provision is also included in the demands of the students of the Medical School of the University of Cyprus, who held a protest today outside the Parliament, handing over a memorandum to the members of the parliamentary Health Committee.
According to the regulation being promoted, each hospital will cooperate with a main Medical School, which will be responsible for the development of university clinics and the coordination of educational and research work.

The provision does not exclude cooperation with other Medical Schools for the education of their students, as had been clarified during the previous meetings of the Committee.

The request for three university doctors is pending

However, the second main request of the students of the Medical School of the University of Cyprus, who held a protest event outside the Parliament yesterday, remains pending.

Students are asking for the mandatory staffing of every university clinic with at least three university doctors.

According to the information of filenews, yesterday's article-by-article discussion did not reach the specific point of the bill and, therefore, no decision has been made on the proposal.

What specific request is of course expected to concern the Parliamentary Committee, as during the article-by-article discussion, the comments of all stakeholders are taken into account and certainly the opinion of both the Ministry of Health and the Legal Service participating in the Parliamentary process.
