The problem with the uncontrolled use of electric scooters is becoming more and more serious in Paphos, despite the campaign launched jointly by the Traffic Police and the Municipality of Paphos.
Yesterday, two users of such personal mobility devices, apparently losing control of these devices, left the pedestrian street on which they were circulating in the tourist area of Kato Paphos and ended up on rocks in the sea, putting themselves and dozens of tourists who were taking their walk at the site at that particular moment in immediate danger.
The accident was noticed by many visitors to the area, several of whom ran and after descending into the water and the rocks that are under the pedestrian street, helped the two scooter users to get out on the pedestrian street, fortunately having only minor injuries and abrasions.
On the occasion of similar dangerous situations that often occur during this period in Paphos, the Mayor, Angelos Onisiforou, returned to the issue today, stressing in a written statement that the safety of the citizens and visitors of Paphos is non-negotiable.
The Municipality of Paphos continues, in close cooperation with the Paphos Traffic Police, the effort to deal with the uncontrolled use of Personal Mobility Devices and other wheeled means on pedestrian streets and public spaces, he emphasizes, while expressing my thanks to the Paphos Traffic Police for the excellent organization, coordination and controls it carries out to deal with the problem.
This effort is not only about the implementation of legislation. It primarily concerns the protection of pedestrians, says the Mayor of Paphos. Every citizen, every elderly person, every parent with their child and every visitor walking on a pedestrian street must feel safe. The pedestrian street is a space for pedestrians. No one should walk in fear that an electric scooter or other device will pass by them at high speed and may drag or injure them, he concluded.
