"WE ARE TERRIFIED TO GET OUT OF OUR HOMES'' - A PACK OF DOGS HAS BEEN SPREADING FEAR TO THE ELDERLY FOR MONTHS - COMPLAINTS ABOUT ATTACKS ON ANIMALS, THE AUTHORITIES ARE INDIFFERENT - Filenews 8/7 by Ioanna Mantziipa

For seven months now, the residents of Korfi, Limnatis, Kapilio and Agios Mamas have been stating that they live in fear of a pack of about ten large dogs, which, according to their complaints, move daily between communities, causing insecurity to people and animals.

Residents complain of repeated incidents of attacks and killing of domestic and stray animals, as well as the entry of dogs into private property, while they claim that despite appeals and reports to the competent authorities, to date no substantial solution has been given to the problem.

Ms. Giota, a resident of Kapilio and an active animal lover, says that the problem has been going on for about seven months, without a substantial and effective solution having been given to date.

Speaking to Filenews, she notes that lately he has repeatedly sent letters to all the services and competent authorities involved, asking for their immediate intervention, as, as she claims, the situation is deteriorating every day.

As she states, the residents of the affected communities, and especially the elderly, are now living in a state of fear and insecurity. "Their souls tremble to go out of their homes," she says characteristically.

"For seven months now we have been facing an extremely dangerous situation with a pack of about ten large dogs, which start from Korfi and move aggressively towards the surrounding villages." As she explains, she initially started receiving phone calls from residents of neighbouring communities, who asked for help, as, as they complained, these dogs had attacked and killed cats and other animals.

"People know that I deal with animals and that's why they communicated with me. They told me that there were dogs that killed their pets. At first I was just trying to gather information, but the situation started to expand and the dogs were moving further and further away," she says.

According to her, wherever the herd passed, incidents of killing animals were recorded, while residents who tried to protect their properties or remove the dogs faced, as she claims, aggressive behaviours.

"They move like a pack and this makes them even more dangerous. As we speak, these dogs continue to move around every day and people are scared. We are talking about elderly people in their 80s and 90s, who call me and tell me that they cannot go out of their homes. We are trying to help as much as we can, asking the residents to file complaints themselves, but the situation remains uncontrollable. There are people who cannot defend themselves and, despite this, dogs still roam free, killing animals and terrorizing people," she emphasizes.

The situation, according to her, has reached a point of no return, saying that "we can no longer sleep at night", while, as she claims, the competent authorities have not taken substantial action to date. "The animals devour everything they find, and the situation continues without effective intervention."

She claims that, despite repeated letters and telephone complaints, local and state authorities are shifting responsibility to each other, with the result that, as she says, the issue remains unaddressed. Ms. Giota notes that she sent a new letter, which she also shared with Filenews, describing the situation as an "extremely serious and ongoing issue of public safety and animal protection".

The letter points out that the problem remains unresolved, despite repeated complaints, reports and interventions to the competent authorities. It is noted that the letter is co-signed by more than 20 residents of the affected communities.
