KATO PAPHOS - THE HARBOUR POLLUTED WITH OIL - Pafos Press 10/7
The presence of a quantity of oil in the marine area of the Kato Paphos harbour is causing concern, with pollution visible on the surface of the water.
According to initial information, the leak may have been caused by a failure in a generator located behind the Port Authority building. It appears that oil leaked from this point and, through the drainage system, ended up in the sea and the harbour.
The exact causes of the incident should be investigated immediately, in order to determine the origin and extent of the leak, but also to prevent further burdening of the marine area.
The immediate mobilization of all involved services is considered imperative, including the Department of the Environment, the Port Authority, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research and the Municipality of Paphos.
The competent authorities are called upon to activate without delay the planned plans to deal with marine pollution, to place the appropriate absorbent and floating barriers and to proceed with the immediate cleaning of the area.
Rapid intervention is necessary, both to limit pollution and to protect the marine ecosystem, the tourist image of Kato Paphos and the professionals active in the port.
