COMMISSIONER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT - ''REDEFINE THE ROLE OF THE LIMASSOL ZOO''

COMMISSIONER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT - ''REDEFINE THE ROLE OF THE LIMASSOL ZOO'' - Filenews 26/6

The discussion on the future of the Limassol Zoo is an opportunity to redefine its role, on the basis of the modern principles of nature protection, environmental education and animal welfare, says the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, in a statement.

The announcement notes that the urban center of Limassol has a few large and compact green spaces and that the area where the zoo is located, in combination with the Public Garden with which it adjoins, has a special environmental, social and cultural value.

As mentioned, the area hosts important species of flora and is a point of recreation, culture and environmental awareness for citizens.

The Commissioner's Office states that upgrading the site is necessary, but without further sealing the ground with new buildings or extensive hard surfaces.

In relation to the zoo, he notes that his position is that it needs to evolve into a modern space, harmonized with the philosophy of European legislation on zoos, which serves environmental education, the protection of biodiversity and the awareness of citizens.

At the same time, it is added, high standards of welfare should be ensured for the animals it hosts, with appropriate spaces that meet their biological and behavioual needs.

In this context, the Commissioner's Office states that the transport of items for which suitable conditions cannot be ensured or which cannot thrive in the climatic conditions of Cyprus should be considered.

At the same time, it notes that the zoo can continue to host species that can thrive in local conditions, as long as it is ensured that it has the appropriate infrastructure and meets the requirements of European legislation for a high level of animal welfare.
