The Plenary Session of the Parliament unanimously accepted the referral by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, of the Motor Vehicles (third party liability insurance) (Amendment) law of 2026.
The rapporteur of the proposal, Alexandra Attalidou, speaking before the Plenary, urged the MPs to accept the referral, pointing out that it does not question the essence of the law but focuses on issues of clarity, practical application and constitutional balance. " We want it to be properly implemented and protect citizens from discrimination," said the MP.
The referred law, as stated in a report by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Equal Opportunities between Men and Women, aims to amend the law so as to prohibit the arbitrary and unjustified refusal to conclude an insurance contract with any person by insurance companies.
Furthermore, the obligation of insurance undertakings for a documented and clear justification for their refusal to conclude an insurance contract is established by notifying the person concerned.
The referred law seeks to strengthen the protection of citizens, prevent discrimination and promote equal access to insurance, as well as strengthen the accountability of insurance companies.
