The Veterinary Services have identified new cases of foot-and-mouth disease, this time in an illegal premises in the area of Livadia. This discovery is of great concern, as this particular property is located very close to the farms that had already been restricted due to the disease.
According to the first information, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the virus in a number of cows inside the illegal premises. Based on the strict health protocols of the European Union, the killing of all the animals of the unit, as well as their landfill, has already been launched, in order to prevent the further spread of the virus in the livestock zone.
The case is now taking on criminal dimensions, as it is being investigated jointly by the Veterinary Services and the Police. It is noted that the premises in question did not have a code from the Veterinary Services, while the way of transporting the animals is also being investigated. The possible movement of animals to and from the already contaminated areas in violation of the decrees is not excluded.
"The situation is assessed as serious due to the proximity of the premises to the already affected units," said the spokeswoman of the Veterinary Services, Sotiria Georgiadou.
Ms. Georgiadou appeals to the livestock farmers of the area to strictly comply with biosecurity regulations.
