MOUTALLOS - OLD SKE BUILDING CLEANED AND SEALED - Filenews 5/3 - by Dora Christodoulou
From early this morning, implementing yesterday's announcement, the Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforou, head of the cleaning crew of the Municipality of Paphos, went to the building in the Mouttalos district that until recently operated as a SKE for the elderly and supervised the cleanliness and sealing of the space.
Today's action of the municipal authority followed yesterday's publicity received by the fact of the use of the abandoned space since September as a place for drug use by various people and the strong complaints of the residents. The crews of the municipal authority removed syringes, other materials for the use of drugs and all kinds of dirt that had flooded the area and proceeded to its general cleaning and disinfection.
Doors and windows were then sealed to prevent the arbitrary entry of people into the building. As stated by the Mayor of Paphos, the municipal authority will closely monitor the issue to prevent the repetition of those sad images that saw the light of day from citizens' video posts, while the Municipality of Paphos will soon make decisions on the utilization of the building for the benefit of the local community.
As Filenews wrote yesterday, until last September, the building in question in a central area of the Mouttalos district hosted the Mouttalos SKE, for the employment of the elderly residents of the district, under the management responsibility of the Municipality of Paphos. That month the SKE closed due to the lack of a large participation of the elderly and given that the needs of this age group of the Municipality of Paphos are now served by the new SKE in a central area of the city.
Angelos Onisiforou even revealed that a few days ago and after relevant complaints reached him, he went to the spot accompanied by a team of YKAN and four persons were indeed found inside the area to be engaged in drug use. These four people were arrested on the spot by the members of YKAN, he stressed.
Mr. Onisiforou also stated that the building that housed the SKE Mouttalos was sealed by the municipal authority, however it seems that in the last few days it has been violated again by some, as a result of which the systematic use of drugs by people who were repeatedly identified by neighbours while using substances has resumed.
