In six units, in Livadia and Oroklini, cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been detected, according to the Veterinary Services.
According to the Director of Veterinary Services, Christodoulos Pipis, there are about 5,000 animals in these units.
He also said that information about illegal trafficking of animals or animal products from the occupied to the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus is being examined, which is strictly prohibited by law.
In particular, he added, the possibility of trafficking hay, which allegedly comes from the occupied areas and according to the available information is of Turkish origin, is also being investigated.
Christodoulos Pipis stated that a European team of experts has been requested to be invited to Cyprus, which will study the possibility of vaccination in the animal population, depending on the development of the problem.
