The Department of Agriculture sent recommendations to the local authorities for preventive biosecurity measures in all livestock areas under its responsibility, and a letter to the District Administrations of Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos for preventive measures to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock areas under their responsibility.
"Following the practice followed by the Department of Agriculture in the case of the Municipality of Aradippou, the Department of Agriculture sent written recommendations to the Local Authorities, so that they proceed with the adoption of preventive biosecurity measures in all livestock areas under the responsibility of the Department of Agriculture, in order to strengthen the already existing biosecurity measures that livestock farmers must take", is stated in an announcement by the Department.
It is added that "the Department of Agriculture sent a relevant letter to the District Administrations of Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos in order to take corresponding preventive measures in the livestock areas that are under their responsibility".
The instructions state that in each livestock area, two points should be placed, a tank (wheel bath) or an automated system, one at the entrance and one at the exit of each area. It is noted that specifications for the construction of the wheelhouses have been sent to all Local Authorities, the cost of which will be covered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.
It is added that, in case there are more entry points in a livestock area, they should be closed so that the entrance is through the disinfection points.
The Department expresses "satisfaction, that after the relevant recommendations it gave to the Municipality of Aradippou, the latter is proceeding with the construction of wheelhouses".
