The Department of Forests is expanding the "Plant for the Climate" program for free seedlings, which in the period 2025-2026 granted about 40,000 seedlings free of charge.
As stated in an announcement by the Department, "through the "Plant for the Climate" Program, during the 2025-2026 planting season, 337 applications have been evaluated by organized groups and about 40,000 seedlings have already been granted".
"The program has been embraced by civil society, enhancing greenery in cities, schools, and communities," it added.
Based on a decision of the Council of Ministers, it is noted, the "Plant for the Climate" program is also extended to the general public, making 35,000 free forest seedlings available to citizens, in addition to organized groups.
For about a week, in six locations in all provinces of Cyprus, citizens will have the opportunity to receive their own sapling and contribute in practice to the strengthening of urban and peri-urban greenery, as well as to the effort to deal with climate change, until stocks are exhausted, it is stated.
Specifically, in Nicosia, those interested will be able to pick up saplings at the southern parking lot of GSP, from February 14 to February 20 between 09:00 – 13:00. In Larnaca, at the same time and at the same times, they can pick up seedlings on the east side of the GSZ parking lot, near the "Metropolis Mall" interchange. In Paralimni, also at the same time and at the same times from Agios Georgios Square as well as from the Port of Ayia Napa. In Limassol, seedlings will be picked up from the parking lot at the "Mall" Shopping Center, while seedlings will be picked up from the Geroskipou Forest Station between February 16 and 20 at the same hours. In Nicosia on Sunday the hours will be until 12:00 while on Monday 16 February no seedlings will be granted.
It is noted that the program "is part of the overall effort of the Department of Forests to strengthen greenery and the resilience of ecosystems, which includes actions for the restoration of fire-affected areas, reforestation programs and restoration projects for degraded areas".
