In the heart of the tourist area of Paphos, next to Fabrica Hill, there is one of the largest theaters of the Hellenistic period in the Mediterranean basin. The local authority is interested not only in preserving it but also in highlighting it and, if possible, using it, in exceptional cases. Recently, the Mayor of Paphos, Mr. Phaedon Phedonos, met with Professor Craig Barker, Director of the University of Sydney's Paphos Theatre Archaeological Programme.
The Archaeological Mission of the University of Sydney has been conducting excavations in the ancient Hellenistic-Roman theater of Nea Paphos since 1955 under the auspices of the Department of Antiquities. The purpose of the Program is to reveal, document and highlight one of the most important monuments of the ancient Cypriot and wider Hellenistic cultural heritage.
At the meeting, the progress of the excavation works, the recent findings as well as the possibilities for further promotion and utilization of the archaeological site were discussed.
