POLICE VIGILANCE ON THE GREEN LINE FOR FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

Filenews 23 December 2025 - by Fanis Makridis

The Police are also taking increased surveillance measures on the green line with the aim of excluding the possibility of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.

Since last week, competent services have been mobilized as soon as there was information about a case in cows in the occupied village of Lapathos in Famagusta. The veterinary services also sent a letter to the Cyprus Police, as we are informed.

The officer of the Police communication sub-directorate, Marina Christodoulidou, answering a relevant question from "F" yesterday, was content to state the following: "Instructions have been given for increased controls in cooperation with the Veterinary Services and the Customs Department".

It should be noted that, as we are in a position to know, the director of the Veterinary Services, Christodoulos Pipis, had sent a letter to the leadership of the Police last week.

After first informing about the situation, he appealed for the Police to ensure the intensification of patrols along the green line, "in order to prevent illegal movements of animals and/or products of animal origin, as well as the crowding/grazing of animals from the occupied areas with animals from the free areas of the Republic to the potential grazing areas that exist along the line".

Mr. Pipis, in fact, called for immediate information to the Veterinary Services "in case you detect such incidents".
