HOW EMPLOYMENT IS SHAPED IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR

Employment in the Broad Public Sector amounted to 74.431 employees in the third quarter of 2025, according to data from the Statistical Service released on Monday.

Of the total, 69,346 people were employed in the General Government, while 5,085 employees are registered in the Companies and Enterprises controlled by the Government. In particular, in General Government, employment is distributed among 52,879 people in the Government10,429 in Non-Profit Organizations and 6,038 in Local Authorities.

On an annual basis, compared to the corresponding quarter of 2024, employment in the Broad Public Sector increased by 1,294 people, recording an increase of 1,8%. An increase was recorded in Central Government by 643 persons (1%), in Local Authorities by 550 persons (10%) and in Government-Controlled Companies and Enterprises by 101 persons (2%).

According to the Statistical Service, the increase in employment in Local Authorities is mainly attributed to the significant strengthening of the staff of the Provincial Local Government Organizations, where an increase of 347 people, a rate of 40.9%, was recorded.

On a quarterly basis, however, compared to the second quarter of 2025, employment in the General Public Sector decreased by 2,883 people, corresponding to a drop of 3.7%.

More specifically, an increase in employment was recorded in Local Authorities by 156 persons (2.7%) and in Government-Controlled Companies and Enterprises by 46 persons (0.9%). On the contrary, in the Central Government there was a decrease of 3,085 people (-4.6%).

This decrease is attributed, according to the data, mainly to the shrinkage of the number of fixed-term employees in the Educational Service, which comes under the Government.
