CBC - EXCHANGE OF LEV TO EURO BANKNOTES IN VIEW OF BULGARIA'S ACCESSION - TO 2 MARCH

The national central banks of the euro area have issued an announcement on the free exchange of lev banknotes into euros, with a view to Bulgaria's accession to the euro area as of 1 January 2026. The Central Bank of Cyprus is also involved in the process.

According to the announcement, the exchange will take place free of charge from January 2 to March 2, 2026, based on the fixed exchange rate of 1 euro = 1.95583 lev.

The exchange cap is set at 2,000 lev per person and per transaction per day. For identification purposes, those interested should present an identity card, as otherwise they will not be able to be served. Lev coins will not be exchanged.

Exchangeable lev banknotes

The banknotes accepted for exchange are:

  • BGN 5: 1999, 2009, 2020
  • BGN 10: 1999, 2008, 2020
  • BGN 20: 1999, 2007, 2020
  • BGN 50: 1999, 2006, 2019
  • BGN 100: 2003, 2018

Service hours

Service will be available Monday to Friday, from 08:30 to 13:30.
