SALE OF REAL CHRISTMAS TREES - MAY BE LIMITED AVAILABILITY. INDICATION OF PRICES

 Filenews 13 November 2025

Citizens are slowly getting into the rhythm of Christmas. Several municipalities have already started decorating the streets, while at the same time Christmas products and gifts are displayed in the shop windows.

In the coming days, the sale of Christmas trees by the Department of Forests will begin, for those who choose to buy a natural, environmentally friendly tree, instead of plastic.

The Spokesperson of the Department of Forests, Giorgos Konstantinou, spoke to Filenews, who referred to the availability, prices and fines that those who break the law will be asked to pay.

Initially, he stated that the disposal of the trees will begin on November 26 and will last until December 19.  "Sales will be made on working days, from 8:00 to 2:30," he noted.

Mr. Konstantinou pointed out that the trees that will be made available come from thinning forest plantations, in the context of forestry manipulations carried out in order to improve growth conditions and reduce competition in forest plantations.

"This year the number of Christmas trees will be limited," he said, adding that these are mainly rough pines and very few black pines.

He underlined that more than 1,000 trees are usually available on the market.  "Due to the drought, we do not know how much we will be able to allocate this year," he said.

Mr. Konstantinou also noted that citizens can, with a phone call, be informed about the availability and dimensions of the trees.

Penalties for offenders

Regarding the penalties for violators, he explained that there are individuals with plantations, who must obtain a permit from the Department of Forests before proceeding with the sale.

It is worth noting that the possession and transport of Christmas trees without the relevant permission of the Department of Forests is, according to the "Forests Law of 2012", an offense punishable by a fine of up to €5,000, or imprisonment of up to one year, or both penalties together.

Increased interest

Finally, he mentioned that in recent years there has been great interest in buying a natural Christmas tree. "Sales exceed 1,000 trees. It is more easily recyclable, cheap and environmentally friendly," he stressed.
