Filenews 12 November 2025 - by Ioanna Mantzipa, Natasha Christoforou, Dora Christodoulou

Panic prevailed in Paphos where it was also the epicenter of the strong earthquake that shook Cyprus around 11:30 in the morning. The earthquake was particularly felt in all provinces, with citizens taking to the streets, schools evacuating classrooms, while so far - fortunately - no injuries or damage have been reported.

According to the first estimates, this was a 5,5 Richter earthquake, followed by seven more aftershocks.

Panicked citizens in Paphos

In Paphos the earthquake was more than noticeable. The intensity of the tremor and its duration caused panic among many citizens who took to the streets, while at least two aftershocks were particularly felt in the next 20 minutes or so, increasing the feeling of concern.

The positive thing about this intense activity is that injuries or serious damage to property were avoided, according to the information. The Paphos Police and Fire Brigade reported a few minutes ago to filenews that there were no reports of damage or injuries to citizens, although the intensity of the phenomenon caused many phone calls from citizens who panicked and asked for information.

The only reference to the consequences of the strong earthquake concerned the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road, on the uphills of Tsada, where stones and pieces of rocks fell from the slopes to the road surface.

The earthquake was particularly intense in the low-lying area of Paphos, while at the airport of the province, which, according to eyewitnesses, has shaken at an unprecedented rate for years, it was necessary to check the runway for any damage before flights resumed, based on the prescribed protocols.

In many parts of the city of Paphos and suburban areas, a concentration of people in open spaces was recorded, after they were leaving their homes and jobs to go out.

Although the intense seismic activity caused very minor problems in the province of Paphos, however, as the president of EDA Paphos, Charalambos Pittokopitis, states to Filenews, the competent services and technicians of the Organization have been instructed to be on constant alert in the coming hours to solve any problems that may arise.

No call for help in Limassol after the earthquake

The Limassol Police has not received any calls for help or reports of material damage an hour after the strong earthquake that occurred around 11:30 and was felt throughout Cyprus.

According to information from filenews, the Message Control Center of ADE Limassol did not receive any request for the release of a person or a report of damage. However, some school directorates contacted the Police, asking for instructions on how to manage the situation and how they should move with the students.

The tremor was particularly felt in Limassol, with hundreds of citizens reporting their experience mainly through social media. In some public services, employees left the buildings for security reasons, while the same happened at the Limassol District Court.

The city's schools followed the prescribed protocol, with students being transferred to open spaces until approval was given to return to classes, which was very much done.

Disturbance in the center of Larnaca

Despite the disturbance caused, mainly among those who live or work in tall buildings, in Larnaca, according to information from the Police, no damage or injuries due to the strong earthquake have been reported, so far at least. The seismic construction was more noticeable in the city center and in coastal areas of the province, where concern was caused mainly due to its duration. In the city center, some residents of apartment buildings, as well as workers, temporarily evacuated buildings, pending official information.

The earthquake was also felt in coastal areas of the free area of Famagusta, but also in Paralimni. According to information from ADE Famagusta, so far, no damage or injuries have been reported.

The Capital was shaken

The earthquake was also particularly felt in Nicosia, with several citizens taking to the streets to protect themselves. The tremor may have been strong, but fortunately, no problems were recorded. According to the Police and the Fire Brigade, so far, they have not received any call for help, either for injury or damage.
