CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 8 October 2025

Death threats from his own son were reported by a man, who fled to the Police fearing for his life. According to information from Filenews, the tension between father and son erupted on the occasion of the former's refusal to give any more money, which - as he claims - his son used to buy and use dangerous substances.

The complainant, while he was at home last week, received messages on his mobile phone from his son, who threatened to kill him.

According to the same information, a short time later the complainant received a phone call from his son, who repeated the threats against his life.

The reason for the tension, according to what the father testified to the Police, was the fact that earlier in the day he had informed his son, in a telephone conversation, that he was not going to give him any more money, as - as he claimed - he uses it to buy gas canisters, which he allegedly uses as drugs.

It is worth noting that that same night, while the complainant was at his residence, he saw his son approaching and repeatedly violently knocking on the entrance door, trying to enter the house, visibly upset.

After the father's complaint to the Police, an arrest warrant was issued against the young suspect, who was arrested yesterday. Today (7/10) he was brought before the Limassol Court, which ordered his detention for a period of one day.

On Tuesday morning, Pyrotechnicians proceeded to safely destroy it with a controlled explosion.

The 26-year-old partner of the 31-year-old foreigner, who was arrested for the crime of premeditated murder in connection with his death, is expected to appear before the Limassol District Court today.

According to information from the Limassol Police Department,  a renewal of the foreigner's detention will be requested. Furthermore, a new autopsy of the body has been carried out, at the request of the suspect's lawyer, in the presence of the private medical examiner Marios Matsakis. For the time being, as we were told, no new finding has emerged.

According to information from Flenews, Mr. Matsakis differentiates the cause of death of the 31-year-old, claiming that his death came from a fall from a height.

It is recalled that, despite the intensive investigations of the investigators of the Limassol TAE, no decisive evidence has emerged to prove that the 31-year-old's 26-year-old partner is responsible for his death. The case remains a mystery, while the young woman has been detained since last Tuesday (30/9) as a suspect for the crime of premeditated murder.  The victim has two penetrating wounds in the abdomen, which, according to the medical examiners, are not justified by the fall.

As Filenews wrote in yesterday's article, the examinations have been completed and the investigators of the TAE Limassol forwarded the case file to the Legal Service. The instructions they received are to renew the detention of the 26-year-old.

The case took a new turn after the findings of the autopsy, which was performed by medical examiners Angeliki Papetta and Orthodox Orthodoxou. According to the preliminary report, the death of the 31-year-old was caused by haemorrhagic shock, as a result of internal bleeding due to a ruptured spleen, while the results of the laboratory tests are awaited. Two penetrating wounds in the abdomen were found on the body, which are not justified by the fall.

During on-site examinations, no object was found in the area that could cause such injuries. Therefore, reasonable suspicions of criminal activity have arisen.

The 39-year-old suspect and accomplice in the attempted murder of a 42-year-old Ukrainian businessman, committed last Monday (29/9) in the outdoor area of a beach hotel in Limassol, has been rearrested for new offenses.

As our website is informed, the re-arrest of the 39-year-old occurred due to the commission of new offenses. Specifically, testimony was obtained that the 39-year-old had been involved in a fight with the same persons a few days before the murder attempt, in another premises.

Following this development, the investigators of the TAE Limassol expect to bring the suspect before the Limassol District Court today, for the issuance of a new detention order for the new offenses that arise. It is recalled that on September 29, according to what was put before the Court, the suspect contacted him and asked him to meet, in the presence of a second person, a member of the Vory organization. The witness refused. However, shortly after, he received a new phone call from an unknown man, who threatened to kill his family if he did not attend the meeting.

Under the weight of the threats, the victim's partner accepted the meeting, which was arranged in a hotel. Their friends were also present, for security reasons. In the hotel area, the victim and his partner approached the suspect and the wanted person, who were at a table. During the conversation, the wanted person intervened and threatened the witness in English, stating that he is "Vory" and that it is not possible to ignore the demand for money. In fact, he warned him that if he continued to refuse, he would kill his family. He then asked to go out of the hotel, where the victim's friends were also present.

The wanted man continued the threats and, when one of the victim's friends asked him to stop, punched him, throwing him to the ground. Then the victim moved towards the 44-year-old, who pulled out a pistol from a purse he was holding and shot him. As heard in Court, after the attempt, the two men took refuge in a café in Zygi, where they asked for a taxi to be transported to Nicosia. Security cameras and the testimony of the taxi driver recorded that they disembarked around 20:30 in an area of Nicosia.

It should be noted that the victim remains guarded at the Limassol Hospital, while in his testimony he stated that his partner was receiving threats from the suspect to pay an amount of €300,000 as "protection" for their company. After repeated pressures and threats, the fateful meeting was arranged, which was also attended by their friends for security reasons, as – according to his testimony – the 44-year-old presented himself as a "Vor", i.e. a person high in the hierarchy of the criminal organization.

The hearing for the five Greek Cypriots accused of "illegal entry into a military zone" continues today, Wednesday, before the "military court".

In the previous proceedings, a postponement was requested at the request of the defense to ensure the presence, as a witness, of a special expert from Turkey.

It is recalled that, against the five Greek Cypriots, the proceedings continue in the "district court" of Trikomo, which during the hearing on October 1 decided to withdraw two of the three charges.

The "prosecuting authority" stated that it was decided to acquit the 5 Greek Cypriots for "illegal entry into foreign property" and "causing concern".

The proceedings before the "district court" continue on October 21.

A 52-year-old Greek Cypriot from Xylofagou was sentenced to four years in prison on October 2 by the Court of the British Bases in Dhekelia for possession of drugs of categories A and B for the purpose of supply.

The man, who was already wanted for similar offenses, was arrested on May 6 near his village for possession of one gram of crystal methamphetamine and has remained in custody ever since. The forensic analysis of his mobile phone linked him to a drug supply case, leading to more serious charges and a severe sentence from the Superior Judge in Dhekelia.

Lieutenant Fanos Christodoulou congratulated the work of the Community Action Team, pointing out that the evidence was decisive for the conviction.

"I congratulate the excellent work of our police officers, because although a gram of crystal methamphetamine you don't hear a large amount, they linked it to a drug supply and he will now be behind bars for a long time.

"He initially pleaded 'not guilty' but when strong evidence emerged they forced him to change his original statement and this was thanks to the excellent work of the police investigating the case."

The Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia rejected today, Wednesday, critical evidence that the Police had secured against the German real estate agent, who is accused of usurping Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories. The Court unanimously ruled that the search of the accused's luggage and the seizure of objects were carried out in violation of her constitutional rights, making these presumptions inadmissible and unconstitutional.

The decision was announced as part of the "trial within a trial", a procedure conducted to judge the legality of the collection of testimony by the Prosecution. The accused, who attended the proceedings with the help of a translator, faces 46 charges concerning, among other things, transactions, advertising, promotion and illegal use of property in the period 2023-2024, as well as money laundering.

The President of the Court, Nikolas Georgiadis, announcing the main points of the 75-page decision, said that the Court focused on the legality of the seizure of the presumptions, the circumstances in which the defendant's written consent was obtained to search her luggage and the export of digital content.

The Court, after evaluating the testimony of ten defense witnesses and prosecution witnesses, ruled that while the arrest process at the airport was normal, the search that followed into her personal belongings was problematic. Mr. Georgiadis pointed out that although the accused had been informed about her rights in German and realized that she was under arrest, the subsequent search and seizure did not meet the requirements of the law and jurisprudence.

In particular, the Court held that the testimony of the constable who carried out the investigation was "general and vague". It did not appear, according to the reasoning, that the seizure of the phone, hard drive and other documents was based on a reasonable suspicion directly linked to the offences under investigation. "The initial seizure was done as routine," the President said, adding that "the circumstances cast doubt" and the Prosecution failed to prove the legality of the process.

The Court, citing Cypriot, European, American and Canadian jurisprudence, noted the principle of proportionality, according to which the power of a police officer to search and seize during arrest cannot be unlimited. There must be a sufficient reason and a direct relationship between the seized and the merits of the case, which was not substantiated in this case, he said.

A violation of the accused's right of access to a lawyer was also identified. Although the police testified that she did not request a lawyer, the Court ruled that this did not constitute a valid waiver of her right. "We do not accept that the phrase 'did not request representation' constitutes a waiver of the right to a lawyer," said Mr. Georgiadis.

According to the reasoning, the renunciation of such a fundamental right must be "daily and formulated without any doubt", with the suspect fully aware of the consequences, which has not been proven. The Court emphasized that the search of her luggage was an investigative act related to the right not to incriminate oneself. Therefore, the consent she gave by signing the relevant form, without the presence of a lawyer and without the consequences of her refusal having been fully explained, was declared invalid. "At this stage, the constitutional rights of the accused were violated. The search and seizure of a series of items was impermissible and unconstitutional," the Court concluded.

Immediately after the announcement of the decision, the spokeswoman of the Prosecution Authority, Anna Mattheou, stated that "the presumptions that are rejected affect the case" and asked for a ten-day postponement for the Legal Service to study its next steps.

The defense attorney, Sotiris Argyrou, agreed with the request for the postponement and immediately raised the issue of returning the confiscated items (computers, documents, etc.), if they were deemed inadmissible as evidence.

The Court set the next hearing for October 20 at 9:00 a.m. and ordered that the accused remain in custody until then.
