WAVE OF SUPPORT FOR TALA'S DECISION TO BRING ORDER TO THE ISSUE OF DOGS

Filenews 19 September 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

The decision of the Tala Community Council to take immediate and practical measures to deal with the scourge, as it is developing, with dogs whose companions do not take any and nothing into account, causes a wave of applause at a pan-Cypriot level. Bringing to the surface an issue that many are reluctant to raise due to the ever-increasing intervention of animal welfare organizations, the decision of the Tala Community Council seems to open mouths and bring to the surface strong complaints of many other local authorities and citizens about the situation caused by quite a few dog companions against society as a whole.

Characteristic are the posts on the Social Media that followed the publication of the decision of the K.S. Talas and which speak of the emboldenment of the majority of dog owners, who, taking advantage of the animal welfare policy and the continuous interventions of organizations, now believe that they can act without taking any into account.

Complaints are now raining down on dogs that roam around unattended every day, intimidating citizens who often meet them in untamed places, who walk around without a leash, whose companions are completely and ostentatiously indifferent to the collection of their faeces, creating an intolerable situation. The Talas case seems to be removing the veil and now revealing citizens across Cyprus beside themselves with what they face every day.

We remind you that in its announcement, the Community Council of Tala, after describing the situation with dog faeces as "unbearable", notified decisions for out-of-court and complaints of irresponsible dog attendants.

A fine of €50, it is emphasized, will be imposed on those who do not collect their dogs' faeces, but also on those dog companions who do not own bags for faeces anyway.

A similar penalty will also be imposed in cases where dogs are unaccompanied or unleashed, when the animal is not microchipped, or when the person responsible for the dog does not have the necessary permits.

The reaction of the Community Council is already causing satisfaction to a large part of the local community, since the situation in recent months has been characterized as nightmarish. Tensions or quarrels between  dog owners and other residents have already been frequently recorded lately, who now react strongly to the irresponsibility of many to pollute public spaces without taking care of cleanliness as they should, but also to cause nuisance in hours even before dawn.

Note - questions have been asked about how this will be applied, if there will be an anonymous report line/email link, whether the Council will react to photographic evidence supplied by complainants, etc.  No reply to date.
