Imagine your children arriving at school calm and happy every morning! Without honking horns, without traffic chaos, without the stress of being late, but with walking and company. This is the philosophy of Walking Bus, the new innovative initiative of the Municipal District of Aglantzia implemented in collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.
Instead of wheels... Steps
The Walking Bus, which is implemented at the 4th Primary School of Aglantzia, operates in a simple but extremely organized way, in order to ensure the protection and comfort of the children: Escorts – traffic wardens of the Municipality, gather the children from their homes and accompany them safely until school and at noon back home. The route is predetermined and organized, like with a school bus, except that instead of wheels it has... Steps!
GPS in each child's school bag
The Walking Bus is not just a new alternative way of transportation, it is a daily unique experience that unites children, the city and the environment. They walk together, make friends, cultivate cooperation and respect, while enjoying the beneficial exercise of the route that enhances their health and well-being. At the same time, they learn from an early age the values of responsibility, sociability and sustainable transportation, contributing to a more humane, cleaner and safer Aglantzia.
For parents, the Walking Bus means less stress, as they know their children are going and returning safely. For the city, it means fewer cars on the roads, less traffic congestion, and a cleaner environment. An innovative GPS system, placed in each child's school bag, informs parents in real time that their child has arrived safely at school and returned home.
For a more sustainable Aglantzia
The Deputy Mayor of Aglantzia, Mr. Andreas Konstantinou, who was at the start of the program on the very first day of its implementation at the 4th Primary School of Aglantzia, said: "With the Walking Bus, our children gain much more than just a ride to school. They learn to live safely, to love walking, to form friendships and to feel that they are part of a vibrant, humane neighbourhood. At the same time, we all contribute to reducing traffic and pollution, promoting a healthier lifestyle and sending the message that our city can become more sustainable and friendly for everyone."
A daily excursion to the neighbourhood
The program, which is part of the Mobility Week, is designed to be a small excursion through the neighbourhood every day. Walking is done safely, on predetermined routes, giving children the opportunity to get to know their environment better and develop a sense of belonging to a community that cares and cooperates.
With the Walking Bus, school is not just a destination, it's an experience and a small daily adventure that starts on the doorstep of the house. And most importantly? It is a beautiful moment of the day that children look forward to with joy, looking forward to experiencing it again and again!
