ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SIX ADDITIONAL VESSELS IN THE NEW PORT BASIN IN LATCHI PROPOSED

The public consultation on the expansion of the port of Latsi in Polis Chrysochous was held today, Thursday, with the aim, as mentioned, of giving the Local Government authorities, interested parties and the public the opportunity to submit comments and suggestions on the impact of the project on the environment. In the brief presentation of the project by the consultants for the expansion of the port of Latsi, it was stated that the project envisages the creation of a new port basin for 186 additional vessels, the construction of breakwaters and the development of new land areas for future building facilities and services.

Also, the formation of a new land area with backfilling, east of the existing leeward breakwater, the reshaping of the final section of the existing windward breakwater to create a new land area. It was also pointed out that in the new land areas, 7 buildings with a total area of ​​4,500 m2 will be constructed in a future stage, where the port's administrative services, recreational areas and shops will be located. The project continued, and also foresees the installation of the necessary infrastructure for the operation of the port such as outdoor lighting, water supply, electricity, a boat fueling station, a waste collection station and sewage collection. Subsequently, in the context of the presentation, they referred to the description of the construction of the project, saying that it includes intense construction work such as dredging work to prepare the area of ​​a new leeward and windward breakwater, the creation of a main access channel to achieve the required depths within the new port basin and the preparation of the coastal quay area. In relation to the description of the operation of the project, they said that it will consist of 7 buildings for service design and serving approximately 200 people per day per building. Also water, liquid waste, solid waste and energy. In the horizontal mitigation measures, reference was made to the environmental management plan for construction works, the emergency action plan during the construction phase, the safety and health plan, the oil spill response plan during the construction phase, the environmental management plan during the Operation Phase (Eco Port), the waste management plan during the operation phase and the fire safety plan during the operation of the project. Regarding the environmental monitoring program, they referred, among others, to noise, marine habitats, sediment quality, monitoring the development of the adjacent coastline, liquid waste from vessels per waste stream, solid waste from buildings, and sea water quality. The presentation was attended by the Port Authority, the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, officials, deputy mayors, scholars and the general public.
