A fire that broke out near Omodos village on Friday afternoon with three separate sources is suspected to be deliberate arson, according to the local community council president.
Evgenios Michael, president of the Omodos Community Council, told Filenews the fire was quickly detected by council members and local residents who immediately alerted authorities.
“Someone sick is setting fires and wants to burn us down. There’s no other explanation,” Michael told us when asked whether the incident was a malicious act.
Michael confirmed there were three fire sources and said the Fire Service was notified immediately. “The smoke was quickly noticed by members of the Community Council” as well as area residents, he said.
The blaze broke out during a meeting in the community attended by Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Minister Maria Panagiotou and all relevant agencies, which had taken place earlier in the day.
Fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis said the fire was brought under control after burning approximately one hectare of dry grass, wild vegetation and debris. The yards of three houses were slightly affected, he said.
