FLOOD PROTECTION AND ANTI-CORROSION WORKS FOR LIMASSOL AND PAPHOS AFTER THE FIRES

Filenews 23 August 2025 - by Angelos Nikolaou

The Water Development Department (TAY) has engaged in a race for the implementation of immediate anti-corrosion and flood protection works in the districts of Limassol and Paphos, following the extensive destruction caused by the two recent fires in the region.

According to information from the TAY, the disasters have affected critical watercourses, including Ha-Potami (Maleta area), Paramalli, Krios and Kourris, making it imperative for immediate intervention with soil retention and flood protection projects.

Based on the preliminary conclusions and the utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the TAY has already defined the areas of intervention. In the first phase of the works (Phase A), the construction of about 25 Gabions type steps is planned, which have been characterized as a first priority.

The implementation of the projects follows a specific timetable and so far the main steps of the process have been completed:

>> The preliminary determination of the intervention sites has been completed, based on gradient, runoff, hazard analyses, etc.

>> The evaluation of Phase A has been completed and Phase B is in progress, with on-site inspections, based on the risk, degree/magnitude of infrastructure impact.

>> The materials (gabions) of the TAY have been frozen and transported to the Limassol district office.

>> The tenders for the supply of gabions have progressed, with their receipt expected by September 22.

Topographic crews of the TAY are already working on the mapping of the intervention areas, while at the same time, the Department's Design Service is working on the final plans and technical specifications for the announcement of construction tenders.

The tenders are expected to be announced in two phases: Phase A: 2 September 2025 Phase B: 6 October 2025

The start of the construction works of Phase A is scheduled for September 22, with the aim of completion by the end of October 2025. Phase B is scheduled for October 24 and is expected to be completed by February 2026.

Interventions are considered of the utmost importance, not only to prevent flooding, but also to avoid further degradation of the soil in the areas affected by the fires. With the heavy rainfall of winter approaching, the implementation of these measures becomes urgent, as without the protection of water streams, there are serious risks to infrastructure, agricultural land and the natural environment.

The Water Development Department is closely monitoring the progress of the project, while according to sources, additional measures may be taken in subsequent phases, depending on the results of the on-site assessments and the intensity of rainfall in the upcoming winter season.
