Filenews 25 August 2025
The Department of the Environment announced that the Audit Branch has been established since February 2025, putting an end to a timeless vacuum. The Branch was initially staffed with 13 inspectors, in the context of strengthening environmental controls.
Between February and August 2025, 137 out-of-court settlements have been issued, totalling €325,000. By comparison, in 2023, 85 fines of about €100,000 were imposed. The Department estimates that by the end of the year the fines will be three times higher than in previous years, which demonstrates progress and increased efficiency.
At the same time, the Department has collaborated with the Police and Fire Brigade, has appointed and trained over 150 local inspectors and is utilizing new technologies for more efficient controls.
Environmental inspections include autopsies on projects and activities, measurements, data collection and compliance with licensing conditions. In cases of violations, immediate enforcement measures are taken.
The goal, as mentioned, is the effective protection of the environment and the continuous upgrading of control mechanisms.
