The new hunting season began today with the summer hunting of the pheasant and the turtle dove. About twenty thousand hunters took up positions from dawn in various habitats, eager for the start of their favourite occupation that will last seven excursions, before the start of the hunting of the endemic game in the autumn.
Satisfied, not so much with the harvest, but because they were given the opportunity again after several months to hunt, most of them appeared. Hunters also criticize their colleagues who ignore the unwritten laws of hunting, while climatic conditions have also had a negative impact.
A 62-year-old hunter was reported by officials of the hunting service in the Nicosia district for hunting in a prohibited area. He will pay an out-of-court fine of €3,000.
Meanwhile, the number of hunters in Cyprus is decreasing every year, according to data from the hunting service. Last year, shortly before the start of the endemic game that begins on November 2, 38,000 hunters had renewed their license. In the previous decade they exceeded forty thousand, while it seems, according to the applications received by the hunting service every year, that there is no longer much interest from young hunters to secure the necessary license.
