The Consumer Protection Service published on Friday the weekly fuel price overview bulletin concerning the prices in force on August 25. It records interesting data on the costs borne by citizens, as well as the revenues of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to the rest of the European Union from fuel taxes.
This bulletin records the average retail prices (with and without taxes) for unleaded 95-octane gasoline, diesel and heating oil, with Cyprus, for 2025, ranking as the 3rd cheapest for gasoline and 7th cheapest for diesel compared to the rest of the European Union.
The data show that Cypriot citizens buy motor fuel cheaper than the average prices in force in the European Union. Of course, this alone, i.e. without correlation between the prices of each country and the standard of living of its citizens, does not provide a clear picture as to how much the finances of households in each different member state are ultimately burdened based on incomes and fuel costs.
In this case, what seems to be clear is that taxes in Cyprus are lower than in the European Union.
Revenue of 65 cents per litre for the state – 92 cents for the EU
In particular, according to the latest available data, the average price of unleaded 95 octane gasoline in Cyprus was €1.350 per liter, diesel at €1.448 per liter and heating oil at €1.009 per liter.
Excluding taxes, the price amounts to €0.695, €0.806 and €0.763, respectively.
In contrast, average prices in the European Union for motor fuels are higher than in Cyprus after taxes, but lower without taxes.
In the European Union, the average price of unleaded 95-octane gasoline was €1.616, diesel at €1.525 and heating oil at €0.943.
Excluding taxes, prices amounted to €0.692, €0.737 and €0.609.
Essentially, the Republic of Cyprus earns about 65 cents for every liter of gasoline and diesel sold, while for other states in the European Union the profit amounts to about 92 cents for gasoline and 78 cents for diesel.
3rd cheapest in gasoline Cyprus – Denmark the most expensive
According to the data published by the Consumer Protection Service, the average retail selling price in Cyprus (including taxes) of 95 octane gasoline and diesel for the year 2025, amounted to €1.378 and €1.461 per litre, respectively. Compared to the Member States and the European average price for 2025, Cyprus ranks as the 3rd cheapest for 95-octane gasoline and as the 7th cheapest for diesel.
The cheapest country to buy gasoline is Bulgaria with €1.247 per liter and Malta with €1.340 per liter, while the most expensive country is Denmark with €1.974 per liter. As far as oil is concerned, the cheapest country is Malta with €1.210 per liter, followed by Bulgaria with €1.246 per liter. In third place is the Czech Republic with €1.372 per liter.
