Cypriots enjoyed an average of 65 years of life without restrictions on activity in 2023, according to data published by Eurostat, exceeding the European average of 63.1 years. The percentage of healthy life years in total life expectancy in Cyprus was 78%, equivalent to that of the EU.
In Cyprus, women had slightly more years of healthy life (65.7) compared to men (64.4). However, women's life expectancy reached 85.3 years, four more than men (81.3), resulting in the percentage of healthy life years at 77% for women and 79% for men.
In the EU, the average in 2023 was 63.3 years for women and 62.8 years for men. Life expectancy at birth for women was 84 years, an average of 5.3 years longer than for men (78.7 years). Men tend to spend a greater percentage of their lives without activity restrictions (80%) than women (75%).
Only in nine Member States did men record more years of healthy life than women. The highest values for men were recorded in Malta (71.7 years), Italy (68.5) and Sweden (67.2), while the lowest were recorded in Latvia (51.2), Estonia (56.5) and Slovakia (56.8).
For women, Malta had the highest performance (71.1 years), followed by Bulgaria (71) and Italy (69.6). The lowest values were recorded in Latvia (54.3), Denmark (55.4) and Finland (55.9).
