SHOCK RULING - EU BANS NAIL GEL - CONTAINS TOXIC SUBSTANCE AND CAUSES FERTILITY PROBLEMS

Filenews 8 August 2025 - by Marilena Panagi

The substance TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) contained in nail polishes (gels) has been found to be toxic, causes fertility problems and can affect the reproductive system in general. For this reason, the EU decided last May to characterize it as "banned" from September 1st.

TPO is a photolauncher, i.e. a substance that activates the hardening process of the material when it is exposed to UV or LED light. Thanks to this action, the varnish gains strength and durability.

The use of this substance, until now, was only allowed in professional products for artificial nails, with a maximum content of 5%.

However, after studies, the EU decided to classify TPO in category 1B CMT (which classifies carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction) and to declare its use prohibited on its territory.

In statements to Filenews, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Elena Panayotopoulos, stressed that "since a substance is classified in this category and its use is prohibited, we must comply because above all it is the safety of citizens, in this case the majority of women in Cyprus".

"That is, when after studies it is found that it is a substance that can cause problems in women, we certainly cannot fail to comply with the relevant Regulation."

The first announcement on this European decision was made last May, while on July 4, 2025 in Cyprus, both professionals in the field and citizens were informed about it.

Industry in the EU, said Ms. Panayotopoulos, was informed immediately after the decision was taken at the European level "to ensure the substitution of this substance in the relevant products."

"Because the ban on this substance will affect a large number of products in the Cypriot market, as part of our effort to inform all those involved, i.e. importers, distributors, beauticians, nail technicians, but also to clarify the implementation of the Regulation, we made an announcement two months before the TPO ban."

As expected, the ban on this substance has caused upset, both to professionals in the field and to importers, many of whom argue that the period between July and 1 September is not enough to be able to replace their stocks with products that do not contain TPO.

Nail professionals and importers, stressed Ms. Panayotopoulos, "must contact their suppliers and ask for the replacement of their products with others that are safe and do not contain the specific substance. The industry is already aware that in Cyprus, as well as throughout the EU, these gels should not be used by anyone from September 1 and there is no margin for any extension to be given."
