Serious shortages of blood are currently being recorded, with stocks at dangerously low levels, as stated by the Head of the Blood Center, Androulla Panagiotou.
Mrs. Panayiotou made an urgent appeal to citizens to come to the blood donation stations, as, as she said, "surgeries are in danger of being postponed" and transfusions may be postponed due to the shortage. The situation is mainly attributed to the absence of citizens due to the summer holidays.
The blood needs amount to 300 bottles per day, in order to maintain the safety stock. "The Center's struggle to find blood is daily," he noted, adding that "surgeries continue and there are many cases of bleeding."
Mrs. Panayiotou announced that blood donations will take place next week at the Nicosia Mall, with the full program to be posted tomorrow on the website of the Blood Center. At the same time, blood donation stations in cities will remain open throughout the day:
- In Nicosia and Limassol, from 07:30 to 20:00.
- In Paphos and Larnaca, with all-day hours, unless they are called for external blood donation, in which case they will operate from 07:30 to 15:00.
