Update - Filenews
After hours of fighting the flames, the fire in the Paphos district that started early on Wednesday afternoon from the garbage dump of Agia Marinouda was contained at 23:38 on Wednesday. The fire burned an area of 1.5 square kilometers of dry grass, reeds, wild vegetation, crops, vine plants, plastic water pipes and a number of trees.
The area that was affected was between the communities of Marathousta, Episkopi and Axlos, while the fire initially started from the area of Agia Marinouda by the garbage dump.
The fiery storm, due to the strong winds, spread rapidly in the area of the community of Agia Varvara and outside Nata and Episkopi and ended up in a tributary of Ezousa. The causes of the fire will be investigated at a later stage.
As reported by the Spokesperson of the Fire Service, Andreas Kettis, during the night strong firefighting forces remained in the area for final extinguishing and vigilance.
Ground and air forces worked to extinguish the fire in Paphos, which spread due to the strong winds blowing in the area.
Specifically, 9 fire trucks, 2 firefighting vehicles of the Forestry Department and 5 earth promoters responded. From the District Administration 2 aquifers and from the Game Service 1 mobile firefighting unit.
Also from the Civil Defense, 1 mobile fire-fighting unit and 2 fire-fighting helicopters from the aircraft.
Residents of the area also contributed to the extinguishing work. Some of them referred to unscrupulous citizens who transport various useless objects, furniture, mattresses and pruning that they burn in the garbage dump of Agia Marinouda, describing their act as criminal.
Ten communities in the Paphos district were left without electricity for several hours as a result of the fire, according to Cyprus Electricity Authority Spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou. The reason for the interruption of the power supply was that poles and transformers were burned due to the fire.
In the meantime, the Senior Officer of the Game and Fauna Service, Nikos Kasinis, referred to a major environmental disaster.
Mr. Kasinis noted that it is an area of great natural beauty. There are, as he said, agricultural crops and the river of Ezusa is part of the Natura region.
