LIMASSOL FIRE - ERATOSTHENES CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IDENTIFIED THE SCORCHED EARTH AT 104 sqkm

 Filenews 30 July 2025

The Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence of CUT has come up with a final and more accurate estimate of the burned area in Limassol, based on very high resolution satellite data. The new mapping determined the scorched earth at 104 square kilometers.

The assessment was made using 30 cm resolution WorldView Legion satellite images, which were obtained without interference from smoke or clouds, allowing high accuracy even at the level of individual buildings. Previous analyses, based on lower-resolution images, identified the area between 120.7 and 124 sq.km.

GTFire, an advanced forest fire monitoring tool that combines real-time satellite data with predictive models, was used to process the image.

The analysis was carried out in collaboration with the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (FMRS AUTh) and the company GEOSYSTEMS HELLAS (GSH). As clarified, by applying techniques for filling spatial gaps, the final estimate approaches the initial, more general estimates.

The Eratosthenes Center maintains a strategic partnership with the TheGoldentwins platform, in the framework of the co-funded ESA F-lab InCubed TheGoldenTwins program, with the participation of NTUA, NKUA, Emtech and other public and private sector bodies.
