RISK OF RUNNING OUT OF TECHNICAL STAFF AT PAPHOS GENERAL

Filenews 30 July 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

While tomorrow the extension of the contract that had been given specifically to the Paphos Hospital to cover its technical needs by members of the Electromechanical Service expires, so far it has not been possible to hire private technicians or further renew the contract with the Electromechanical Service. Revealing information from "F" states that the issue is of great concern to hospital officials who express fears about serious problems related to the operation of the Paphos Hospital in case the pending issue remains.

Our information was confirmed by Paphos MP Chrysanthos Savvidis, who stressed that he has been aware of the concern expressed by competent officials from the situation that is developing. As Mr. Savvidis explains, until last year, the Electromechanical Service covered the technical needs of all state hospitals in Cyprus with its staff, a status that has now ceased, he says, after tenders were announced and contracts were awarded to cover these needs by private individuals.

The only hospital that did not complete this process was the Paphos Hospital, he stressed, resulting in the renewal of the mandate to the ECE to cover its technical needs until July 31, 2025. With the timetable expiring tomorrow, Mr. Savvidis said, a very worrying situation is being created given that the process of assigning the technical coverage of the hospital to a new contractor has not been completed, while a new extension has not been announced to cover the needs of this state department.

The risks for patients and staff from any electrical, technical or hydraulic problems that could arise are understandable and very worrying, he says, in case there is no official administrator of these issues from August 1.

I immediately call on those responsible to take decisions on the technical support of Paphos Hospital, as is already the case in all other hospitals, before tomorrow expires.
