 Pafos Live 27 June 2025

Solutions to the problems faced by patients due to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, is sought by the opinion of Michalis Hadjipantelas as shadow rapporteur of the Public Health Committee on the Implementation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

In particular, the 88% vote will form the basis for future EU policies and highlights the problems that burden patients as well as the differences arising from the different standards of treatment and medication that arise between the EU and the UK.

Gist of the opinion:

1. Rare diseases: Better cooperation for the exchange of information, aiming at faster diagnosis and treatment.

2. Seamless access to treatments: Simplifying procedures for patients in need of treatment in the UK.

3. Transplants: Acceleration and simplification of procedures.

4. Research and Innovation: Strengthening research into new treatments, especially in rare and complex diseases.

5. Medical staff shortages: Common recognition of professional qualifications and experience to fill gaps in critical health facilities.

6. Cross-border threats: Cooperation and coordination under the World Health Organization (WHO) to address health crises.

Mr. Hadjipantelas, as shadow rapporteur, stated that "the health of European citizens is a priority. Brexit has created challenges, but with concrete initiatives we can ensure that no one is left without a cure. Our proposal for enhanced cooperation, especially in rare diseases and cross-border crises, is a step in this direction."
