 Pafos Live 11 June 2025

After evaluating information, officers of the Customs Department at Paphos Airport chose to check the baggage of a 26-year-old Greek Cypriot passenger, who would depart yesterday from Paphos for London, United Kingdom.

During the inspection of his luggage, 119 boxes of 200 cigarettes were found, each of which did not bear the marking for the harmfulness of smoking in Greek and Turkish, nor the security feature and the unique traceability code, indications that they were duty-free. The aforementioned quantity of cigarettes was confiscated by the officers of the Customs Department, while the passenger was arrested for flagrant offenses.

He then abandoned the confiscated property for destruction and was released, after accepting his proposal for an out-of-court settlement of the offences with the payment of an amount of €8,000.

The 18-year-old motorcyclist has been intubated in extremely critical condition since Saturday evening, who was seriously injured in the head after an accident he had when he lost control of the motorcycle he was driving. From the examinations carried out so far by the Limassol Traffic Police, as well as the independent testimonies that have been collected, it appears that the 18-year-old was driving the motorcycle on one wheel, in the area of the C' Industrial of Agios Sylas.

The same information suggests the young man was driving another person's motorcycle, which, however, was not located at the scene of the accident and investigations are being carried out to locate it.

The young man remains intubated from the very first moment in an extremely critical condition, after suffering multiple skull fractures and a brain haemorrhage.

According to the Police, the traffic accident happened around 11:30 last Saturday evening (7/6), on a road in the Third Industrial Area of Agios Sylas in Limassol.

Rapid developments are taking place around the case brought to light by filenews last week, which concerns complaints against a Greek Cypriot employer for serious sexual harassment offences against its employees. According to our latest information, the number of complainants now amounts to seven, while three of them have been identified as victims of human trafficking, following examinations by the Anti-Trafficking Bureau of the Police Headquarters.

The suspect was brought again today (10/6) before the Limassol District Court, where in a closed-door procedure, a request for the renewal of his detention for another three days was approved, in order to continue the investigation of the case.

He is being investigated for nine offences relating to trafficking in minors, sexual exploitation of adults, sexual exploitation of children, harassment and sexual harassment, as well as harassment in the workplace, indecent assault against a woman and a man and indecent acts.

The allegations – one of which concerns a minor at the time of the events and a young man – are appalling, as they allegedly describe systematic harassment and exploitation within the workplace, which is located in a village in the Limassol district.

As it emerges from the testimonies and the investigation, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the vulnerable financial situation of his employees, as they are people who permanently reside in the countryside, where finding work is particularly difficult.

For the case, testimonies are expected to be taken from other persons, former employees of the suspect's premises, as well as from his family, professional and friendly environment.

It is recalled that the complainants complained that their Greek Cypriot employer sexually harassed them during their work, at the premises he maintains in a village in the Limassol district. The offences were allegedly committed from 2020 to January 2025, in their workplace, on different occasions.

On Wednesday morning, the Permanent Assize Court of Larnaca imposed a 4-year prison sentence on lawyer Giorgos Yiagou, 34 years old, in connection with a case of deception of a client from whom he extracted thousands of euros, while he also managed to freeze his property, in order to allegedly secure a lawyer's fee of €2 million.

The defendant was found guilty, following a hearing on seven charges relating to money laundering and causing the execution of documents with false representations.

Imposing the sentence, the court thundered the accused lawyer, stating that highly incriminating evidence was found against him, with his actions demonstrating pre-planning and fraud. "Apart from fraud, we must emphasize that he is an officer of justice. Taking advantage of the friendship and trust that the complainant had in him, he deceived him in the most deceitful way. Such behaviours cannot be tolerated by the court," said the president of the Assize Court, Loizos Mougis.

According to the court's findings, the lawyer had drawn up a plan for the financial exploitation of the complainant, with whom he maintained friendly and family relations. Because of this relationship, the complainant seems to have signed that a document was brought to him by his lawyer, without reading it, resulting in the risk of losing a fortune of millions.

According to the facts of the case, in July 2020 the defendant registered a ghost company in Britain by paying £12, through his brother's Revolut card, which later turned out to be not involved in the case. The share capital of the virtual company was only £1, while the name of the person appearing as a director was found to be serving a prison sentence in Greece at the time for repeated fraud. The "company" with the prisoner as its director, a few days after its establishment, asked the complainant's company to undertake the conversion of a large number of containers into cold rooms, for an amount that exceeded €11 million.

The ghost company never paid the money, as it is understood, and then the lawyer filed a lawsuit against it, in the name of his client. Among the documents he made him sign was that he himself would receive a fee of €2 million. He then took legal action claiming the money for this fee, freezing, without the complainant's knowledge, his property.

It is noted that the lawyer managed, previously, to extract €4,000 from the complainant for a lawsuit against his company for an alleged work accident. In another case, he also extracted €6,000-€7,000 from him for filing a libel lawsuit.

As mitigating factors, the accused's blank criminal record, as well as his personal circumstances, were taken into account.

The case was handled by Antonis Antoniou on behalf of the Prosecution.
