CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 13 May 2025

The investigation of the Police in relation to the alleged burglary, robbery and stabbing of a 35-year-old man in his home in a community in the Nicosia District that was submitted this morning completely changes course.

The Police initially investigated a case of robbery after attack against the 35-year-old, who is hospitalized at the Nicosia General Hospital. However, the investigations of the members of the Nicosia TAE and the evidence under examination do not seem to substantiate the incident.

In fact, according to information from Filenews, a completely different version is currently being considered and developments are expected soon. The 35-year-old has given a revealing testimony to the Police in which he allegedly mentioned some issues for which examinations are now being carried out for documentation.

Also, from the investigations so far, the robbery is not locked nor does there seem to be evidence that documents the theft of an amount that is alleged to have been snatched by "the perpetrators" in its initial allegations, which is why more thorough examinations are now being carried out in a specific direction.

Investigators are expected to take testimony from the 35-year-old's work environment as well as others to fill in the full range of events surrounding the case, which is no longer considered a robbery.

The Assize Court sentenced the 27-year-old to eight years in prison for the offence of possession for the purpose of supplying 8.2 kg of cannabis, possession of 89 grams of cocaine. and illegal possession of explosives and specifically 1,700 firecrackers. One was sentenced to two years in prison for possession for the purpose of supplying 890 gr. cannabis, while the second in 15 months for possession in order to supply 267 g. Cannabis. Both were also given shorter sentences for other offences they admitted.

The Court took into account various mitigating factors, such as the young age of the main defendant, as well as the family and personal circumstances of all the defendants. For the other two defendants, who did not admit, the case was set for continuation in the next period.

According to the facts, on August 3, 2024, the Limassol Police Department arrested the 27-year-old, in whose room 8 kilograms of cannabis, 89 grams of cocaine, precision scales and 1,700 firecrackers were found. A heavy "bell" of up to €28,000 is being paid by the young driver from the Limassol district, who killed a hare last night with his vehicle in an area near the Parekklisia quarry.

As Filenews is informed, the vehicle was occupied by two young men of about 25 years old, who – as it became clear from the investigations of the Game and Fauna Service in Limassol – had gone out for illegal hare hunting.

Due to the suspicious movements of the vehicle, the members of the Service placed it under surveillance and shortly afterwards approached the two young men. During the vehicle objection proceedings, the members noticed that a nylon bag was thrown from the vehicle.

After stopping and checking the vehicle, a check followed in the area where the bag had been thrown, inside which there was a freshly killed hare.

The driver of the vehicle, according to the same information, admitted that he killed the hare with his vehicle and was subsequently issued an out-of-court bond of €28,000.

A similar case, as reported to us by the spokesperson of the Game and Fauna Service, Petros Anagiotos, was recorded last September in the Athalassa Forest. The person who shot the hare was issued an out-of-court bond of  €31,000, which concerned, in addition to poaching, various other offenses.

Customs Department officers confiscated untaxed tobacco products and animal products in two separate incidents at the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint on May 8.

In the first case, officers searched a vehicle driven by a Greek Cypriot entering the government-controlled areas from the northern part of Cyprus. Hidden in the engine compartment, officials discovered and seized 10 cartons of cigarettes, 14 cartons of heated tobacco products, and 1.75 kilograms of rolling tobacco.

The confiscated items lacked required health warnings in Greek and Turkish languages and did not bear the security feature and unique traceability code, indicating they were untaxed. The driver and passenger were arrested but later released after accepting an out-of-court settlement.

In a separate incident on the same day, officers stopped a vehicle driven by a Ukrainian national. A search revealed a suitcase containing 34.29 kilograms of fish derivatives (caviar) and 10.3 kilograms of fish fillets (salmon and crab).

The animal products were seized under Green Line Regulation provisions. The driver was initially arrested but later released after accepting an out-of-court settlement. The confiscated products were abandoned by the individual and will be destroyed following proper procedures.

Why is the movement of animal goods restricted under the Green Line Regulation?

The Green Line Regulation restricts the movement of animal goods across the island’s dividing line primarily to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with European Union (EU) veterinary standards.

The movement of live animals and animal products across the line is generally prohibited. This prohibition encompasses productive animals, pets, meat, milk, feathers, skins, animal manure, snails, reptiles, and game. An exception is made for fresh fish intended for commercial purposes, which may cross the line at the Agios Dometios crossing point, provided they are accompanied by the appropriate documentation from the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and have been inspected and approved by the Veterinary Services.

The rationale behind these restrictions is rooted in the need to protect animal and public health within the EU. The areas of Cyprus not under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus are not subject to EU veterinary surveillance, and there is insufficient information regarding the state of animal health in these regions.
