LATCHI CITY SEA AND CULTURE MULTI-SPACE - THE QUINTESSENTIAL INTERACTIVE MUSEUM OF CYPRUS

 Pafos Press 3 April 2025

As part of the ongoing effort to highlight the cultural and natural heritage of the region, the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous is dynamically proceeding with the implementation of an important project entitled: “Upgrading and beautification of the Port Authority warehouses in Latsi into a Multi-purpose Sea and Cultural Space” . The Mayor, Mr. Giotis Papachristofi, speaks to PafosPress about the importance of the project, the goals and the expectations that accompany it.

Mr. Mayor, the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous is implementing a project entitled “Upgrading and beautification of the Port Authority warehouses in Latchi into a Maritime and Cultural Multipurpose Space.” Can you give us more information about this Multipurpose Space?

The project began in its first phase on September 1, 2020 with a budget of approximately one million euros and was completed on December 31, 2023. We are currently in the second phase of implementation, which includes the upgrading of the space with innovative technologies. This phase is expected to be completed in June 2025. The consultant for the implementation and coordination of the project is the ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence.

It is worth noting that the first phase of the project was implemented within the framework of the "Sea 2014-2020" Operational Program , while the second phase is co-financed by the "Sea, Fisheries and Aquaculture 2021-2027" Program and the European Union.

What prompted you to create the Sea and Culture Multispace?

The Municipality of Polis Chrysochous includes 14 municipal districts and occupies a large area of the Akamas Peninsula, as well as coastal districts of the Gulf of Chrysochous — areas with a pivotal role in the Mediterranean Sea and its centuries-old history.

The water element, the cultural identity of the settlements, the harbour of Latsi, the marine biodiversity and the natural wealth of the area, prompted us to create a multi-purpose space dedicated to the Sea and Culture . The area is a popular tourist destination and the project, under the guidance of the ERATOSTHENIS Center of Excellence , will further highlight its natural and cultural value.

What is the goal of the project?

Our goal is to highlight the natural, nautical and cultural heritage of the region through the creation of an innovative, high-standard Museum, suitable for all age groups.

The Multi-Space will showcase maritime activity, maritime trade, the role of the port from antiquity to the present day, fishing, tourism and the unique biodiversity of the region. The Museum will use innovative digital applications and technologies designed by the ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence , offering a vibrant and immersive experience to visitors.

Where will the Multipurpose Hall be housed?

Polychoros is housed on the Latsi waterfront, next to the homonymous port, in a 519 sq m listed building that previously functioned as a carob warehouse. The utilization of this historic, but abandoned space was one of our main priorities.
