 Pafos Live 18 March 2025

Cyprus will join the European Space Agency as an equal member in the near future, according to the Deputy Director of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, George Komodromos.

Speaking on the sidelines of an international conference on Remote Sensing and Environmental Geoinformatics held in Paphos by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence of CUT, Mr. Komodromos noted that in recent years great strides have been made in the space sector, noting that the Republic of Cyprus has spent an amount of  €15 million for the creation of a national ecosystem dealing with space technologies.

Professor Konstantinos Karantzalos, Secretary General of Telecommunications and Post at the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, pointed out that along with the implementation of the national space policy, various projects are being implemented, among them the sending of microsatellites into space. As he clarified, a large part of the project is of Greek design and construction and gradually Greece acquires greater autonomy in this sector, which initially concerns the development of telecommunications. Speaking at the conference, the director of the ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence, Professor Diophantus Hatzimitsis, pointed out that tools have been created to help deal with emergencies but also in other uses such as agriculture, meteorology, environmental protection, natural disaster management, cultural heritage and blue growth.
