President Trump left no doubt that he intends to implement the policy of increased customs duties against EU countries as well, in statements on the second day of his second presidential term.
As Reuters reported, Trump said the European Union "is very bad for us. It treats us very badly. They do not import our cars or our agricultural products. They don't actually buy anything great," adding that consequently EU member states can expect "customs duties" to be imposed.
The U.S. trade deficit in the balance of trade with the EU stood at $131 billion in 2023, according to data from the Trade Representative (USTR), and was concentrated in four main countries — Germany, France, Ireland and Italy.
"We have a trade deficit with the EU (amounting) to $350 billion," he insisted yesterday. "China is aggressive, but not just China. Other countries are very aggressive."
