Mayor of Amathus: These apartment buildings have been troubling us for years

In his statements, the Mayor of Amathus, Kyriakos Xydias, said that "these four apartment buildings have been troubling us for years. Since the time of the Municipality of Germasogeia we have sent many letters. These apartment buildings are under management and we have brought the manager to the City Council. Today, however, it is a different case. One apartment building, as you can see, has been renovated. The fall of the balcony today was caused by the work they carry out inside, by the vibrations that exist in the building. A balcony has collapsed, in the effort of the owners to basically support the apartment building and renovate it."

The Mayor said that because, due to the reform, the building competence does not belong to the Municipalities, he has already informed the EDA in the field of Licensing, the engineer in charge to check whether the safety and health measures have been taken in the existing building.

As he noted, "the work carried out is what we want to be done. That is, the owners should carry out renovations in order to remove the risk. Unfortunately, today's decline has been brought about by these processes. All that remains is to check whether the contractor had obtained the required permits and adheres to the building safety plan. For the rest, what is happening here is a good thing. One of the four apartment buildings will be removed from danger."

Mr. Xydias said that the municipality recorded all dangerous constructions on the coastal front. But, he explained, "as is the legislation today that provides that the municipality must vacate the apartment buildings, find space for those who live, proceed with the rehabilitation, we want 3-4 municipal budgets to fulfil this process and we will never get the money back. We will wait if a memo is put on the properties and if they tie up to transfer to repay. It is impossible for either the municipality or the EDA. Because most of them do not live as landlords, but as tenants, there needs to be an amendment to the legislation so that we can seal them, deem them unsuitable, deal only with safety issues and when landlords have no income they will make sure to fix them."
