CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 12 January 2025

A new case of internet fraud and extortion of money by false representations is being investigated by the Police. The victim this time was a woman resident of Paphos, from whom the criminals managed to extort a sum of money amounting to approximately €15,000.

According to what the complainant reported to the police, about two years ago, she accepted a friend request, on a social media platform, from an unknown person. This person introduced herself as a woman living in a European country.

During their conversations, the stranger told the complainant that she was gravely ill and was being treated at a hospital. She also told her that she would appoint her as her heir for the sum of €60,000, since she said she had no relatives. To this end, she asked the complainant to send her her telephone number and a photograph of her identity card, which the complainant did.

A few months later, communication between the two was suddenly cut off. Subsequently, various unknown persons, who presented themselves as lawyers and/or administrators of the alleged deceased's estate, began to communicate by telephone with the complainant.

These persons on several occasions demanded money from the complainant, supposedly for the purpose of arranging the mission of the inheritance. The complainant was convinced and between 2023 and 2025, she sent various sums of money to the strangers, totalling around €15,000.

After the complainant realized that she was a victim of fraud, she filed a relevant complaint with the ICF of Pafos, which is investigating the case,

On the occasion of this incident, the Police remind everyone that behind every online account, any person can hide, regardless of how it is presented. That is why the public is once again called upon to always be careful and suspicious in all their actions online.

In the most official way, it is confirmed that the death of the young man from Pakistan who was found dead in Strovolos on 6/1, is linked to the incident in the area of Potamia, during which shots were fired by members of the Police in their attempt to stop and arrest suspects.

According to police, tests showed that the dead man had been wounded with a service weapon.

"At this stage we will not make any further statements regarding the case as the investigative work is ongoing." "As soon as we can report something more, we will do so," the police briefing added.

We remind you that on 6/1 members of the Anti-Poaching Squad were conducting a motorized patrol in the area of Potamia, when they noticed three vehicles moving through the buffer zone.

They attempted to intercept those vehicles when one of the drivers developed speed and drove his vehicle towards one of the police officers who had exited the official vehicle to stop them.

The member of the Police used his service pistol aiming at the tyres of the car, but the driver of this vehicle as well as the second vehicle managed to escape towards the buffer zone.

Subsequently, the driver of the third vehicle was signalled to stop, but he also developed speed, driving his vehicle towards the member of the Police.

The police officer managed to enter the service vehicle, as a result of which the suspect's car collided with the front of the service vehicle. Shots were fired at the tyres of this vehicle, the driver of which also managed to flee towards the buffer zone.

The role of a coroner

An investigation is also underway into the role of the coroner who conducted the autopsy at the scene and later the autopsy. In his autopsy at the scene where the dead man from Pakistan was found, he ruled out any criminal activity. That is why the case of the 24-year-old's death was initially investigated by the central police station (Lycabettus).

Four days later, however, and specifically on Friday morning, during the autopsy he performed, he found a 9mm bullet bullet in the body of the deceased, with an entrance wound on the right side of the back. It was then that the ICF of Nicosia was notified, as evidence of criminal or other action emerged.

The Ministry of Health has requested a report on the events from the Police. It is obvious that he wants to examine the circumstances under which the member of the forensic service of the Republic, which is under the control of the Ministry of Health, acted.

Documents in suitcase

Another aspect of the case is the suitcase with documents found during the investigation into the death of the 24-year-old from Pakistan. It contained a large volume of documents relating to foreign persons. These documents are evaluated by the members of the ICF of Nicosia. It is not excluded that they may be part of the action of an organized ring for illegal stay of foreigners in the Republic.
