Pafos Live 30 December 2024
The excavation work carried out on Fabrica Hill and the importance of the site in the development of the new Pafos was analyzed in a lecture recently at the Center for Natural and Cultural Heritage of the American University of Beirut by Dr. Claire Balandier, Professor of Archaeology and Ancient Greek History at the University of Avignon, France.
Mrs. Baladier, as head of the archaeological mission that has been conducting excavations on Fabrica Hill in Kato Pafos for the last fifteen years, said that as part of the excavation work they discovered that the area of Fabrica Hill was the Acropolis of the city, with very important monuments for the history of Kato Pafos.
The head of the archaeological mission said that the Fabrica Quarries are the most important after the Petra quarries in Jordan and Sicily.
In her description of the excavation, Claire Balandier said rescue excavations were carried out on the south side of the new roundabout. At this point, two burials of the late Medieval period were excavated, one for children and one for teenagers, and at the top of Fabrica hill, around the pebbled Hellenistic mosaic that adorned the floor of a 'banquet hall'.
The excavation proved that the room with the mosaic floor belonged to a building of the Hellenistic period and that it was supplied with water by a clay pipeline that is preserved in very good condition. This building seems to have been partially destroyed by later Roman-era water supply projects, which included the construction of a pipeline and cisterns.
