 Filenews 4 November 2024

Cypriot patients will have their first Ombudsman in the new year, said the President of the Federation of Cyprus Patients' Associations, Charalambos Papadopoulos.

The leadership of OSAC had a meeting today with the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and according to the president of the organized patients, all pending issues in the field of Health were discussed.

He referred to the bill on the Patient Ombudsman, whose article-by-article discussion is expected to begin in Parliament on November 21 and, as he said, "as everything shows, and if there are no unforeseen events, the first Patient Ombudsman will be appointed early next year."

During the meeting, they also discussed the problems that have been created with the delay in the payment of allowances to relatives/escorts of patients who go abroad for specialized surgeries or other examinations and, as he said, it was agreed that a meeting will be held with the Ministry of Health to study how "or not to transfer the patient subsidy to the Health Insurance Organization", when the Agency also undertakes the programme of sending patients abroad.

For the National Cancer Institute, it was agreed, as Mr. Papadopoulos said, that "it will operate as a private law body", while for the establishment of University clinics, OSAC expressed its full support to the Government's efforts to promote the relevant bill in Parliament.
