British intelligence officers turned a Russian agent in Cyprus posing as a plumber into a double agent, gaining access to secret communication channels between Moscow and Tehran.
According to a report by the British Daily Express, the operation, which lasted three months, revealed that Iran sent Fath 360 ballistic missiles to Russia in exchange for technology for its nuclear program.
The novel-like story unfolded according to Express in Paphos, where the Russian agent codenamed “Sunshine 24” posed as a self-employed plumber.
His cover was exposed and the British were tracking him, taking advantage of his love of sea fishing. The trap was set in May when a British agent called him posing as the worried resident with a flooded room, and they soon shared a love of fishing, leading to his successful recruitment.
