Fighting the flames for almost four hours during the night were forces of the fire brigade, the forestry department, the district administration and volunteers to extinguish two fires that broke out in areas of the communities of Makounda and Steni.
A little earlier, a fire had been extinguished in a riverbed between the communities of Kouklia and Mandria. The fire in an area of Makounda village broke out about 20 minutes before nine in the evening and about an hour and a half later it was extinguished after burning an area of a penny covered with bushes and dry wild vegetation.
While the fire was raging in Makouda, around 9 p.m. another fire broke out in a ravine near the village of Steni. And this fire was extinguished about half an hour after midnight after burning an area covered with wild vegetation and some trees.
The time when the fires broke out leaves no doubt that they were set maliciously, and the fire brigade, in cooperation with the police, are trying to obtain testimony capable of bringing to justice those responsible. The work of arsonists is also the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in a riverbed between Kouklia and Mandria.
The fire burned two hectares of land covered with wadding, reedbeds, acacia trees and dry grasses. Ground forces worked to extinguish it, while the assistance of two helicopters was needed. It is noted that a fire broke out in the same area ten days ago.
