SILENT ATTACK BY CORONAVIRUS

Filenews 20 July 2024 - by Marilena Panayi

The number of people hospitalized for coronavirus has remained relatively high in recent weeks, while the Ministry of Health and scientists are monitoring the data very closely, as Covid-19 continues to attack. From last Monday until yesterday in state hospitals, a total of 64 people were hospitalized, while the picture was similar in the previous week.

Yesterday afternoon there were around 50 patients in hospitals with the number, however, constantly varying due to new admissions and discharges. The increase in the number of hospitalized coronavirus patients began to be recorded from the beginning of May. The highest number of hospitalizations was recorded in the first week of July (67 patients, two in ICU).

Last week, the number of cases recorded was 22% higher than the previous week. A gradual increase seems to be recorded in the positivity rate, while according to data until July 14, the largest percentage concerns more the elderly (85 years and over), with the second age category being people 80-84 years old.

However, the largest increase (from week to week) seems to be observed in young and very young ages and specifically in children 0-3 years old and 12-18 years old. However, most cases recorded between 8 and 14 July concerned 35-39 years old and 55-59 years old and were mainly detected in Nicosia.

The increase in cases and hospitalizations with coronavirus is expected and is not observed at this time only in Cyprus. The situation is characterized as fully manageable, mainly in terms of the capacity of the health system, and for the time being the authorities do not seem worried.
