HEATWAVE MEASURES - CIVIL DEFENCE RECOMMENDATIONS TO DEAL WITH EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURES

The Civil Defence Force made recommendations to the public, aiming at prevention and proper preparation to minimize the risks and negative consequences of the heatwave.

The reason is the new yellow warning issued by the Department of Meteorology, regarding extremely high temperature that is expected to rise around 41 degrees in the interior and 33 degrees in the mountains.

In particular, it proposes:

• Avoid unnecessary travel and heavy physical work under the sun.

• Avoid sunbathing, walking for too long or running under the sun.

• Avoid crowded areas.

• Wear cool, comfortable and light-coloured clothing.

• Protect your head with a hat.

• Wear good quality sunglasses that protect against sun glare.

• Eat small and light meals, rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fats.

• Drink plenty of water and fruit and vegetable juices.

• Avoid alcoholic beverages.

• Avoid sudden temperature changes.

• Use artificial ventilation means (fans) or air conditioning system.

• Contact your doctor for health problems that may occur.

• Take care of relatives or other close ones who are elderly or in need of care.
