REVOCATION OF BEACH USE PLAN IN ARGAKA

Filenews 1 June 2024 - by Angelos Nicolaou

At the last meeting of the Central Beaches Committee (KEP) on May 28, 2024, the decision was taken to revoke the Plan for the Use of the organized beach in Argaka, for the reason that a very important condition is violated, under the strict condition of which the relevant Plan for the Use of this beach was approved.

It is noted that this beach is located within the Natura 2000 area "Polis-Gialia" whose main conservation and protection target is sea turtles.

The Central Beaches Commission from the previous summer season of 2023, turtle breeding season, had received a complaint from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, the department responsible for the sea turtle protection program, that after an on-site inspection of its inspectors, it was found that the condition stating that "during the nesting period of the turtles, May 1 to September 30, all beach beds must be removed from sunset to sunrise."

The KEP immediately requested the competent Local Authority to take the appropriate actions and inform the KEP in writing, otherwise the KEP will be forced to immediately revoke the said Beach Use Plan in order to safeguard the nesting of turtles.
