The Pafos Permanent Assize Court imposed today 15.04.2024, a 1-year prison sentence on a 45-year-old British man. The British man pleaded guilty to offences of reckless or dangerous driving in violation of Article 7 of the Motor Vehicles and Traffic Traffic Law 86/72 as amended and to leaving the scene of an accident without assistance in violation of Article 235 A(2)(4) of the Criminal Code Cap.154, offences for which the Law provides for a prison sentence of up to 2 years or a fine.
The original charge the defendant was facing related to the felony of attempted murder was suspended by the Attorney General. Among other things, his immediate admission and the absence of previous convictions were taken for the benefit of the accused.
Ioannis Polycarpou, 58, was fatally injured when he was swept away on his motorcycle by a vehicle driven by the 45-year-old. The fatal road traffic collision occurred in the early hours of January 21, 2023, on Tombs of the Kings Avenue, and the driver fled the scene.

An Israeli man has been arrested by police after a foreign exchange office employee complained that he stole her office keys. In the possession of the foreigner who was using another person's ID, a pistol dummy, a hood, a wig and plastic packages for immobilizing persons were found.
The 48-year-old allegedly stole the employee's bag yesterday morning, which included the keys to the store, a currency exchange. In the afternoon he was spotted wandering in the area and police believe they prevented a criminal act.

Police arrested a 24-year-old Greek Cypriot man on suspicion of setting fire to a Syrian barber shop on Ellados Avenue, which was completely destroyed.
The authorities are in possession of testimony that gives rise to reasonable suspicion of the arrestee's involvement. On the contrary, they have so far no evidence of the explosion of a bomb in a vehicle in Mesogi. Pafos Assistant Police Director Michalis Nicolaou appealed to citizens to provide the police with information to put an end to the unacceptable criminal acts that have been increasing recently.

A fire at the door of the kindergarten in the Faneromeni area of Nicosia was noticed around 10 pm on Friday and as the Police estimate it is an act related to juvenile delinquency.
As a police spokesman told CNA, the fire appears to have started from sheets of paper placed on the wooden door of the kindergarten.
He added that the immediate intervention of the fire brigade prevented the fire from spreading inside the building.
According to the Police, investigations are resumed today to solve the case by the Police and Fire Brigade.

Under the influence of drugs and specifically cocaine, a 25-year-old man from Limassol was found driving yesterday afternoon.
Before the members of OPOD Avdimou stopped him, the 25-year-old threw two bags containing a quantity of cannabis out of the window of his vehicle.
According to the Police, at around 15:45 yesterday, members of Avdimou OPOD, while on patrol on the Limassol-Paphos motorway at the exit of Episkopi, spotted a vehicle that did not have a registration certificate and a certificate of suitability.
The police signalled to the driver, but as soon as he noticed them, he threw two bags out of the driver's window.
The driver then stopped and the Police proceeded to arrest him and received both bags.
The 25-year-old was taken to the Episkopi Police Station and tested positive for cocaine.
Under questioning, the 25-year-old confessed to committing the offences and after being charged in writing, he was released to be summoned to court later.

A mobile camera van was once again targeted in Limassol with the perpetrators throwing Molotov cocktails near the vehicle.
The incident, according to the police, took place around 21:20 on Friday night when they received information about Molotov cocktails being thrown, which was ignited nearby by a mobile camera vehicle in the area of Kato Polemidia.
Fortunately, no injuries or damage were caused to the vehicle.
Members of the Police are conducting examinations for the incident, which is the second to take place in the area of Polemidia.

The 38-year-old man accused of raping a 48-year-old woman was indicted before the Permanent Assize Court of Limassol. The heinous acts of which he is accused took place within an institution as the victim is a person with mental disabilities.
The detention order of the 38-year-old expired today and the investigators of the ICF Limassol proceeded to register and refer the case for trial before the Permanent Assize Court of Limassol. The case was set for a hearing in May.
The court imposed restrictive conditions on the 38-year-old defendant after he requested that he be released until the start of the trial. As Philenews is aware, the Court ordered the defendant to deposit title deeds amounting to €150,000 and a sum of €15,000.
The accused is asked to surrender his travel documents while his name will be placed on the list of persons whose exit from Cyprus is prohibited. He will also present himself every day at a Limassol Police Station to sign. According to the same information, he was detained until he managed to fulfil the conditions imposed on him.
The case came to light when the director of the institution realized that the 48-year-old was behaving strangely. Coming out of a certain area of the institution, he asked the 48-year-old if anything was going on, and then the latter reported that the 38-year-old had sexually abused her. Immediate steps were taken to inform the complainant's home and then the victim to file a complaint with the ICF of Limassol.
