VANDALISM REMAINS A PROBLEM IN PAPHOS

Filenews 29 January 2024 - by Dora Christodoulou

The situation in the city of Pafos is not improving with regard to vandalism in parks and other public spaces of the Pafos Municipality where landscaping and regeneration works have only recently been completed, as well as on the information signs of Public Works and other authorities.

This fact raises concerns for the Municipality of Pafos, especially after the situation of spaces and works that were only recently renovated in the context of the wider renovation of the historic and commercial centre that is still in progress.

Officials of the Municipality raise the issue of inadequate controls by the police authorities, but also wrong decisions by state or independent authorities of the Republic, given that the Municipality strongly requested that the installation of cameras be allowed to deal with these phenomena, which was rejected.

On this issue, however, the competent Commissioner for Personal Data Protection had replied last October to the municipal authority that this issue does not come up against its own denial, but against the provisions of the Municipalities Law itself, which needs to be amended.

The continuation of vandalism in parts of the city that have recently been renovated and beautified, however, intensifies the climate of anger in the Municipal Palace, with local authority officials working on plans for more active involvement of the Traffic Service in cases of detection of suspicious movements of young people or actions of an anti-social nature.
