Along with the projects to transform it into a smart city, Pafos institutions are now promoting its transformation into a cyclist-friendly city. A goal that is considered of primary importance, since the aging road infrastructure does not currently favour cycling, resulting in frequent incidents of injuries and accidents involving cyclists, a fact that discredits the city abroad.
Pafos tourism agencies, with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, had pre-pandemic preliminary planning for the creation of cycling routes in the Pafos district from 2021. The pandemic that occurred in the meantime, left this planning, like many others, incomplete and now officials resume efforts to promote it in 2024.
The design for the new cycling routes aimed to highlight the countryside, the beautiful landscapes and the particular morphology of the communities of Pafos. Four new routes have been planned, mainly covering northeastern Pafos. At the same time, the implementation of the second phase had begun before the pandemic, which includes five routes that will cover the areas of Pegeia, communities of Laona, Polis Chrysochous and Akamas.
Visitors to the Paphos district will now be able to enjoy the exciting experience of cycling even more elevated as part of the wider holidays in Paphos, as a magical destination for activities, adventure and professional training.
At the same time, the bodies of the province have an ongoing effort to find the necessary funds for the implementation of the necessary projects, while the plan to promote and publicize these new routes through specialized channels promoting cycling tourism is in full implementation. However, the new cycling routes are considered necessary for the city and province, since most roads are outdated and therefore dangerous for cyclists.
